Testing Centers Vs. Testing at Home

When preparing for the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL), one crucial decision you’ll face is choosing between testing online from the comfort of your home or opting for an in-person experience at a testing center. Each option comes with its own set of considerations, so it’s essential to weigh them carefully to make the choice that aligns best with your needs and preferences. Note that for the MTEL-Flex there is no option to go to a testing site.

Here are some important things to know:

Timing

If you opt for the in-person route, you’ll need to allocate approximately 4 hours and 15 minutes for either the reading or writing subtest individually, or for both subtests combined. On the other hand, if testing online at home you will have less time: the reading subtest requiring 3 hours, the writing subtest also taking 3 hours, and if taking them combined you will have 2 hours and 30 minutes for the writing subtest followed by a brief 15-minute break, then an additional 1 hour and 30 minutes for the reading subtest.

Cost

Considering the financial aspect, both in-person and online testing options come at comparable prices. The fees for the reading subtest alone are $76, for the writing subtest alone it’s $85, and for both subtests combined, the cost is $112, regardless of whether you choose to test in person or online.

Accommodations

For those requiring special accommodations, it’s important to note the differences between testing modalities. In-person testing allows for breaks, access to specific accommodations, and the ability to take notes using a dry erase marker. Conversely, online testing prohibits breaks but offers a digital scratchpad for note-taking during the examination.

Scores

The timeline for receiving your test scores also varies depending on whether you opt for in-person or online testing. In-person test-takers typically receive their scores via email within two or more weeks after the examination, whereas online test-takers can access their scores immediately upon completing the test.

Proctoring

During the testing session, both in-person and online options provide proctoring services to ensure the integrity of the examination process. In-person testing involves having a proctor available to assist with any questions that may arise, while online testing entails continuous monitoring by a proctor via the computer throughout the duration of the test.

Testing Availability

Lastly, the availability of testing appointments may influence your decision. While in-person testing is subject to the scheduling constraints of testing centers, online appointments tend to offer more flexibility and availability, making it easier to find a time slot that fits your schedule.

Summing it Up

Below is a chart summarizing all of this info!  Ultimately, whether you choose to take the MTEL online at home or in person at a testing center, it’s essential to consider factors such as timing, cost, accommodations, score delivery, proctoring, and testing availability. By weighing these factors against your own preferences and circumstances, you can make an informed decision that sets you up for success on exam day.  Only you know what is right for you, but we are happy to help you decide!  Send us an email or sign up for a free consultation!.
